What’s been in the works at the studio…

August and September blew by and I certainly was a wee bit slammed between our 4th Anniversary at Gupton Gallery, various commissions and regular day to day here in the studio! I’ve been working away and thank goodness have somehow crammed in some time to create new originals (that I’m quite happy with).

The humuhumu sculpture, or Trigger Fish,  is the first full on sculpture I've created in wood (it's a maquette for a much larger piece I'll be creating later this year). This was a really fun piece to put together, it was interesting planning out each component and how it’d slot into place for the finished product, and how I will scale it up for the big brother of this little guy.

The He’e is also a new original that I finished up at the end of September. It’s Acrylic on board and those with eagle eyes will probably notice that I actually prepped the background for this a few months ago. Preparing gradients and backgrounds in advance allows me to jump right in to sketching with chalk when I have an idea in mind. I kept the pen & ink relatively simple on this piece and focused on a clean hibiscus pattern with a few fun details hidden in (of course)!

The piece with the 3 fish is still untitled but I finished it up this week! It started as more of a doodle as I was sketching different lines. Then it evolved into something I wanted to flesh out more. I ended up inking this one with blue ink and did a wash of water color along the line work to add depth, and don't be surprised if this becomes huge in the future!!

The seahorse is still a work in progress. It’s acrylic on board and I used a variety of techniques to get to the stage where it lies now. I’ve used the airbrush and brushwork to shade and color the seahorse....one of these days I'll start the pen & ink, but I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you

That’s just a small peek into some of the projects I’ve had in the works lately!
